Is it one fixture or the main line

Worth two minutes before you call anybody, because it changes both the price and the urgency.

It is the fixture

One sink, one tub or one toilet is slow or blocked, and everything else in the house drains normally. The blockage is in that fixture's own run, usually within a few feet of it, and it is almost always hair, grease or something that should not have gone down there.

This is the $250 version. It is not an emergency unless the fixture is the only one of its kind in the house.

It is the main line

Several fixtures are affected at once, or any of these:

That is everything in the house trying to leave through one blocked pipe. It costs more, around $335, and it genuinely does not wait — the next thing to use water is the one that overflows.

Cabling or jetting

The two methods are not grades of the same service and the choice matters more than the price difference suggests.

Cable machine Hydro jetting
What it does Punches a hole through the blockage Scours the pipe wall back to its diameter
Typical $250 branch, $335 main $525 branch, $725 main
Right for A one-off blockage Grease, roots, a line that keeps blocking
Leaves behind A clear channel through the debris A clean pipe

A cable gets the water moving again, which is usually all anybody wants at the time. What it does not do is remove the grease ring or the root mass that caused the blockage — it goes through it. That is why a line cabled in March is often blocked again by September.

Jetting costs roughly twice as much, and most of that difference is the machine rather than the hours: a cable machine is a $1,500 tool and a trailer jetter is a $20,000 one.

Which to ask for

The emergency premium

A same-evening or weekend call adds roughly 45%, which turns a $250 job into $360 and a $725 one into $1,050.

That premium is real work — somebody is leaving their house at nine at night — and it is also the moment you have the least ability to compare quotes, which is the part worth planning around.

When it genuinely cannot wait

When it can

A slow drain is a warning rather than an event. The cheapest drain cleaning you will ever buy is the one you book for Tuesday morning while the sink still works.

What to do before the plumber arrives

Chemical drain cleaners

They work on hair in a bathroom sink and on very little else.

What they do not touch is grease, roots, a collapsed pipe or anything beyond the first few feet of run. What they do is sit on top of the blockage generating heat, which can soften PVC and corrode old cast iron. If one has been used and the drain is still blocked, say so when you call — it changes how the job has to be approached.

An enzyme-based maintenance product is a different thing and is worth using monthly on a kitchen line that has a history.

When clearing it is not the answer

If a line blocks repeatedly after being properly jetted, the problem is the pipe rather than what is in it. The usual causes are root intrusion at a joint, a bellied section holding water, or a collapsed clay or cast iron line in a house built before the 1970s.

A camera inspection is how that is established and typically costs $250 to $500 on its own. It is worth paying for before a third clearing, not after — and any plumber recommending a line replacement without having put a camera down it is asking you to take several thousand dollars on trust.

Common questions

How much does drain cleaning cost?

Around $250 to clear one blocked fixture during normal hours, with most calls falling between $205 and $310. A blocked main line is closer to $335. Hydro jetting rather than cabling roughly doubles it, and an after-hours call adds about 45%.

How do I know if it is the main line?

If more than one fixture is affected, if the lowest drain in the house backs up, or if flushing a toilet makes another fixture gurgle or rise, the blockage is in the main line. One slow sink with everything else draining normally is that fixture's own run. The main line costs more and genuinely does not wait; a single fixture usually can.

What is the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?

A cable machine punches a hole through the blockage and gets the water moving. Jetting washes the pipe wall back to its full diameter with high-pressure water. Cabling is right for a one-off blockage; jetting is what grease and root intrusion actually need, which is why a line cabled in March is often blocked again by September.

Why is hydro jetting twice the price?

Mostly the machine. A cable machine is a $1,500 tool and a trailer-mounted jetter is a $20,000 one, plus hoses, nozzles, fuel and water. The hours are not that different — the equipment is.

How much more does an emergency plumber cost?

Around 45% on a drain cleaning call, so a $250 job becomes $360 and a $725 jetting becomes $1,050. That is real work at an unsocial hour, and it is also the moment you have the least chance to compare quotes. If the water has somewhere to go overnight, booking normally is materially cheaper.

Do chemical drain cleaners work?

On hair in a bathroom sink, sometimes. On grease, roots, or anything past the first few feet, no. They sit on the blockage generating heat, which can soften PVC and corrode old cast iron. If you have used one and it is still blocked, tell the plumber — it changes how the job has to be approached, because somebody is about to reach into caustic water.

How long does drain cleaning take?

About two hours for a single fixture with a cable machine, including arrival, diagnosis and setting up. Hydro jetting is closer to four, because the machine, the water supply and the hose run all have to be set up before anything starts. A main line through a roof vent rather than a cleanout takes longer again.

What is a cleanout and why does it matter?

A capped access point into the drain line, usually outside near the foundation or in a basement. Working through one is faster and cheaper than the alternatives, which are going in through a roof vent or pulling a toilet off its flange. Finding yours before the plumber arrives is worth real money.

My drain keeps blocking. What does that mean?

That the pipe is the problem rather than what is in it. The usual causes are roots at a joint, a bellied section holding water, or a collapsed clay or cast iron line in a house built before the 1970s. A camera inspection costs $250 to $500 and is worth paying for before a third clearing — and any plumber recommending a line replacement without having put a camera down it is asking for thousands on trust.

Can I clear a blocked drain myself?

A fixture blockage, often. A plunger, then removing and cleaning the P-trap under the sink, clears most kitchen and bathroom sink blockages for the cost of a bucket. A hand auger is around $30 and reaches a few feet further. Stop there: a main line, anything needing a powered machine, and anything you cannot see the end of are jobs where the damage from getting it wrong costs more than the call.
